Then there are other tribes which work hand in hand with the government, offering slices of meat in the form of doubletalk; or hope - hope as a chain of submission. Then there are the tribes that suckle at the breast of telecommunications every evening after work and are fatally lulled into society's deep sleep. Day after day they experience waking nightmares but they've either bought the can of the tribe that offers hope, or they're too fucking exhausted or fearful to break through the illusion and examine the structures of their world.
There are other tribes that experience the x-ray of civilization every time they leave the house or turn on the TV or radio or pick up a newspaper or when they suddenly realize their legs have come to a halt before a changing traffic light. A civil war and a national trial for the 'leaders' of this country, as well as certain individuals in organized religions, is the soundtrack that plays and replays in the heads of the members of that tribe. Some members of the tribe understand the meaning of language. They also understand what freedom truly is and if the other tribes want to hand them the illusion of hope in the form of the leash - in the form of language - like all stray dogs with intelligence from experience, they know how to turn the leash into a rope to exit the jail windows or how to turn the leash into a noose to hang the jailers. But when the volume of that war reaches epic dimensions, and when the person hearing it fails to connect with another member of the same tribe who can acknowledge the sound, that person can one day find themselves on top of a water tower in suburbia armed with a high-powered rifle firing indiscriminately at the ants crawling around down below. That person can one day find himself running amok in the streets with a handgun; that person can one day find himself lobbing a grenade at the forty car motorcade of the president; or that person can end up on a street corner, homeless hungry and wild-eyed, punching himself in the face or sticking wires through the flesh of his arms or chest." - David Wojnarowicz, Close to the Knives, page 46.

A third thing is to have a craft, have a skill, have one thing that you can do. If it's something you can do with your hands, all the better. Have a real skill, for the sake of yourself, and for the sake of others. Those are very fundamental. I would say that political sanity and engagement can in part come out of a curriculum like that. To make fellowship, joy, and freedom work for a day or a week is far more doable than the permanent transformation of society, and it can inspire people to return to that society in its everyday incarnation with renewed power and ties. The anarchist theories Hakim Bey famously coined the term temporary autonomous zones to describe these phenomena, neither revolution nor festival, in which people liberate themselves for pleasure and social reinvention. He saw their ephemerality as a survival technique, a way of arising, affecting, and vanishing before any move to repress arose: “The TAZ is like an uprising which does not engage directly with the state, a guerilla operation that liberates an area (of land, of time, of imagination) and then dissolves itself to reform elsewhere/elsewhen before the state can crush it.” The goal is not permanence or confrontation, and the moment of liberation can be recreated, so that lapse is not necessarily a defeat.” - Rebecca Solnit, A Paradise Built in Hell, page 169.

A right combination of image and tune plunges the audience into a hal (something between emotional/aesthetic mood & trance of hyperawareness), outbursts of weeping, fits of dancing — measurable physical response to art. For us the line between poetry & body died with the bardic era — we read under the influence of a cartesian anesthetic gas.
In N. India even non-musical recitation provokes noise & motion, each good couplet applauded, “Wa! Wa!” with elegant hand-jive, tossing of rupees — whereas we listen to poetry like some sci-fi brain in a jar — a best a wry chuckle or grimace, vestige of simian rictus — the rest of the body off on some other planet.
In the East poets are sometimes thrown in prison — a sort of compliment, since it suggests that the author has done something at least as real as theft or rape or revolution. Here poets are allowed to publish anything at all — a sort of punishment in effect, prison without walls, without echoes, without palpable existence — shadow-real of print, or of abstract thought — world without risks or eros.
So poetry is dead again — & even if the mumia from its corpse retains some healing properties, auto-resurrection isn’t one of them.
If rules refuse to consider poems as crimes, then someone must commit crimes that serve the function of poetry, or texts that possess the resonance of terrorism. At any cost re-connect poetry to the body. Not crimes against bodies, but against Ideas (& Ideas-in-things) which are deadly and suffocating. Yagé is an inedible, nondescript liana that seldom flowers. True, its bark is bitter, often a clue to medicinal properties, but it is no more so than a hundred other forest vines. An infusion of the bark causes vomitting and severe diarrhea, conditions that would discourage further experimentation. Yet not only did the Indians persist but they became so adept at manipulating the various ingredients that individual shamans developed dozens of recipes, each yielding potions of various strengths and nuances to be used for specific ceremonial and ritual purposes." - Wade Davis, One River, page 217.

In effect we are saying the end is not as important as the means, we are turning hundreds of years of political form and content on its head by putting the means before the ends, by putting context in front of ideology, by rejecting purity and perfection, in fact, we are turning our backs on the future.

Movement works heavily against any tendencies towards surplus building and accumulation, which suggests that sedentism is a key factor in the origins of social inequality. In addition, the nomadic life is one that acts as a natural leveler of social conflict, which becomes a major issue once human beings start to create permanent settlements. In an article on "egalitarian societies," Woodburn examined six foraging societies with IR economies: the Mbuti, the !Kung, the Pandaren Paliyan of Southern India, the Batek Negrito of Malaysia, and the Hadza.
